The Community Against Prejudice Towards Autistic People (CAPTAP – formerly known as SARN (Stigma Autism Research Network)) was established by Monique Botha and Eilidh Cage at the University of Stirling and Kayden Stockwell from the University of Virginia following the May 2021 International Society for Autism Research (INSAR) conference panel on “Global Insights on Understanding and Reducing Autism Stigma”.

The aim of this network is to connect with others and create a community of people passionate about reducing stigma and prejudice towards autistic people. The network aims to facilitate collaborations, share knowledge, prioritise lived experience, and has the ultimate aim of making change happen.

VALUES:

  • Respect: We respect one another and all the skills, experiences and perspectives each person brings to this network. If we disagree with someone, we do so respectfully.
  • Listen: We listen to and are open to hearing about others’ views and experiences.
  • Learn and un-learn: We acknowledge that we are all still learning and admit when we are wrong or when we need to ‘un-learn’ something.
  • Safe space: This network is a safe space where people can seek support and advice, and feel able to ask questions without judgement.

CAPTAP has group meetings every two months with guest speakers. We also have several ‘working groups’ dedicated to different topics – for example, we have one group working on anti-ableism resources, another focused on access to healthcare, and another passionate about reducing prejudice in educational settings. We use Discord to connect with each other between meetings. At the moment we have over 250 members from all around the world.

If you would like to join CAPTAP, you can sign up here.
